Toyota Mirai
FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
4.5

2019 Mirai

For commuters who live in a region where the hydrogen fueling infrastructure is already built out, opting for the 2019 Toyota Mirai may make a lot of sense. For starters, it's a genuinely futuristic experience since the Mirai is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell that converts the stuff of stars into electricity and water. This electricity goes to a small battery that drives the motor while the water leaves the tailpipe as vapor.

Advantages of Buying a New or Toyota 86

It's easy to pick on the 2019 Toyota 86 and count the ways it falls just short of excellent. It's small inside. There's limited passenger and cargo space. It's not particularly comfortable, especially for taller drivers, and its technology feels dated and inadequate.

With the financial considerations set aside, your lease or purchase decision is influenced by your lifestyle and personal preference. Do you get attached to your vehicle? Do you keep your car for more than 4 years? If so you may want to purchase; however, if you get bored with a car after about two years, you are part of the growing number of Americans than are part of the leasing lifestyle, then you may be the ideal candidate for leasing.
9 Limited time purchase financing offer provided through Toyota Financial Services on approved credit on new retail sales of qualifying models. † Cash incentives valid on retail delivery of select new unregistered vehicles when purchased and registered between May 1, 2019 and May 31, 2019. Cash incentives are comprised of a customer incentive and/or an incentive for cash customer. Incentives for cash customers are available for all Toyota retail customers except customers who lease or purchase finance through Toyota Financial Services at a special rate of interest offered by Toyota as part of a low rate interest program. All advertised lease and finance rates are special rates. Cash incentives (including incentives for cash customers, customer incentives, lease assist, finance assist and various other cash incentives that can arise from time to time) include an amount on account of sales tax and are applied after sales taxes have been charged on the full amount of the negotiated price. Offers are subject to change without notice. Quantities of certain vehicles are limited and dealer trade may be required. Dealer trade availability may also be limited and will vary by model.
The brand name Toyota was derived from the founder’s last name Toyoda, as Toyota was seen to be more pleasing to the ear and recognizable. Marketing efforts have strategically been directed at the high reliability factor and ease of ownership of Toyota vehicles. The operations management philosophy is strategically aligned with Toyota’s message of quality, as the Toyota Production System (TPS) is very prominent in lean manufacturing. The automaker is also a leader in lean manufacturing, with the invention of concepts such as "Kaizen", the need for improvement, and Just in Time (JIT) manufacturing to reduce waste. The company has constantly been rated top quality by J.D Power, and has also received the Top Safety Pick Awards by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the Yaris Hatchback, Corolla, Camry, Prius, Prius V, Venza, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, and Tundra.
If slow and steady wins the race, the Corolla takes the checkered flag. The only noteworthy aspects of its uninspired engine and transmission options are an available manual transmission and a more powerful LE Eco model. For a more involved driving experience, opt for the stick shift, but don't expect anything transformative. Buyers seeking a semblance of peppiness should look at any other competitor.
Rear-seat room is one of the few areas where the new car doesn't beat the old one. Rear legroom drops by more than six inches (the old Corolla had a positively palatial amount of space in back), so it's not quite as Uber- and Lyft-friendly, but the rear quarters are still more spacious than in the Corolla hatch and perfectly comfortable for two adults. Interior materials are solidly average for the class—scratchy cheap plastic bits are kept to a minimum, and the dashboard layout is attractive enough—and the infotainment setup is easy to use, with volume and tuning knobs and standard Apple CarPlay capability (Android Auto is not available).
There have been several models over the years, including the Corolla Ceres (and similar Sprinter Marino) hardtop, Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno sports coupés and hatchbacks, and the Corolla FX hatchback, which became the Corolla RunX, while the Sprinter became the Allex, with the introduction of the ZZE128 Corolla. The RunX and Allex was replaced by the Auris in 2006 (known only as Corolla in markets outside Japan, Europe and South Africa). A luxury version of the Auris installed with V6 engines was briefly sold at Japanese Toyota dealerships Toyota Store and Toyopet Store locations as the Blade, which was discontinued in 2012.

2 Limited time purchase financing offer provided through Toyota Financial Services on approved credit on new retail sales of qualifying models. Finance example based upon $30,634.00 financed at 2.99% APR equals $890.74 per month for 36 months with $0.00 down payment or equivalent trade-in. Cost of borrowing is $1,432.64, for a total obligation of $32,066.64. Taxes, license, insurance and duty on new tires are extra. Dealer may sell for less. Time limited offer at participating dealers. Offer subject to change/cancellation without notice. See your participating Toyota dealer.
Corollas are manufactured in Japan at the original Toyota Takaoka location built in 1966. Various production facilities have been built in Brazil, (Indaiatuba, São Paulo), Canada (Cambridge, Ontario), China (Tianjin), India (Bangalore), Pakistan (Karachi), South Africa (Durban), Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Venezuela. Production has previously been carried out in Australia (Victoria), New Zealand (Thames) and the United Kingdom (Derbyshire). Production in the United States (at NUMMI in Fremont, California) ended in March 2010.[4] Production resumed the following year after the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi plant was opened in November 2011 in Blue Springs, Mississippi.[5]
